The Arch is Realized in the Circle Ellipse Engine
The arch has been the hallmark of strength and simplicity for millennium. In ancient Rome, the arch was used to support great aqueducts carrying water between mountains. Middle age cathedrals used the arch to support soaring church ceilings. In modern times, the arch means low-cost structural strength for stadium domes, and even the Volkswagen Beatle. Now the arch is an integral part of an engine. The Circle Ellipse Engine takes advantage of the strength of the arch, eliminating stresses that deform all other engine implementations.

1) A Circle Ellipse Engine works differently than a reciprocating piston engine. In a reciprocating engine, the cylinder volume alternately does four different jobs -- intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust. A Circle Ellipse Engine does these same four jobs, however each happens in its own part of the ellipse housing interior. It's like having a dedicated cylinder for each of the four jobs, with the piston moving continuously from one job to the next. And there are 12 dedicated combustion chambers per revolution, so the energy is produced continuously without any vibration or retracing.

2) A Circle Ellipse Engine comprises a circular outer Housing having an elliptical inner cam surface, and an internal round Rotor partitioned into equal segments. These are populated by identical movable radial Vanes. During rotation, the end of the Vanes are maintained a constant distance from the elliptical inner cam surface of the Housing. The Rotor has the same radius as the minor axis of the elliptical inner cam surface. During rotation, a variable height cavity is created representing the difference between the major and minor axes of the elliptical inner cam surface and the Rotor face.

3) The Vanes are guided by slots in the Rotor, and extend to the elliptical inner surface of the Housing. The precise extension is governed by a pin track in the End Plates. There are no pistons, camshaft, chains, valves, valve lifters, rocker arms, connecting rods, or wrist pins. Size and weight are significantly reduced when compared to a reciprocating engine of similar horsepower. Normal aspirated air is drawn into the engine when an pair of adjacent Vanes pass the air inlet port. Similarly, exhaust products are expelled when the pair of adjacent Vanes pass over the exhaust port.

4) The resultant geometry forms a continuous implementation of the Otto Cycle; intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust during a single rotation of the Rotor. Since the Otto Cycle is executed each revolution of the Rotor, the Circle Ellipse Engine achieves the same power as a conventional reciprocating engine of the same displacement and compression ratio, at half the RPM. This implementation greatly reduces internal ware and greatly extends the life and maintenance cycle. As a side benefit, the power losses and vibration common to all reciprocating engines are eliminated.
